Celebrating Rocky Mount Mills
Rocky Mount Mills, established in 1818 on the Tar River, is one of the oldest cotton mills in North Carolina and a landmark of Southern industrial history. Over its long life, it has endured war, repeated destruction and rebuilding, and a complex legacy that includes enslaved labor, child labor, and large-scale textile production that once supplied Confederate forces. After closing in 1996, the historic mill was reimagined into a vibrant 60-acre mixed-use campus blending preservation with modern innovation.
Today, the same walls that once powered the textile industry now house breweries, homes, restaurants, and creative spaces—including ARTLAB. If these walls could talk, they would reflect on centuries of change and ask what they might become next. At ARTLAB, we see ourselves as part of that continuing evolution—building the future within a place defined by reinvention
